What is the difference between Dynamics 365 and Power Platform?

The two are closely related, and the distinction is worth understanding because it affects both licensing and how you address new needs.

Dynamics 365 consists of ready-made apps

Sales and Customer Service come with well-designed processes, forms, and reports from Microsoft. You configure them without having to devise what a sales process should look like.

Power Platform is the building blocks

Power Apps for custom applications, Power Automate for automation, Power BI for reporting, Copilot Studio for agents. Tools for building what isn't available out of the box.

Same foundation

Both use Dataverse and the same security model. A Power App can access the same customer data as Dynamics 365, with the same access rules. That is why the combination works so well.

The practical consequence

Use out-of-the-box functionality where it exists, and build your own where it does not. Most organizations end up using both—and that is the right place to be.
