When does preventive maintenance pay off?
Preventive maintenance is often presented as an obvious choice. The numbers determine whether it pays off, and they do not always support it.
The breakdown must cost significantly more than the inspection — in repairs, downtime, or reputational damage. And the equipment must fail predictably enough for an inspection interval to make sense. If something fails at random, you are not preventing anything; you are just spending more time.
Planned work can be scheduled where it fits into the route. Emergency call-outs come at the worst possible time and disrupt the day for more than just that one customer. The benefits of this flexibility in scheduling often outweigh the repair cost itself.
Without an overview of what equipment is located where and when it was last serviced, the system cannot generate work orders. Registration is therefore the first step, not the last.
