When should we use the planning assistant instead of manual planning?
Work orders can be scheduled manually on the schedule board, with the scheduling assistant, or fully automatically using the Resource Scheduling Optimization add-in. Each of the three is suited to a different situation.
If you have a handful of technicians and a planner who knows both the staff and the customers, manual planning on the timeline board is perfectly reasonable. It is also the right place to start, because it forces you to clarify what actually determines your priorities.
The assistant suggests available resources that match the resource requirement criteria—skills, territory, and time window. It does not make the choice for you, but eliminates options that are not feasible anyway. This is the right step when the planner starts spending more time searching than evaluating.
Resource Scheduling Optimization automatically schedules and optimizes across driving distance and working hours. The benefits are tangible when there are many daily assignments, but they depend on skills, working hours, and territories being maintained correctly. If they are not, it produces routes that no one follows — and planners then lose confidence in the tool.
