What is preventive maintenance, and is it worth it?
Preventive maintenance consists of scheduled visits based on time or usage, rather than emergency call-outs when something has stopped working.
When downtime is costly, failures are predictable, or call-outs outside working hours are expensive. For equipment that is inexpensive to replace and not critical, it may be cheaper to wait.
The cost of scheduled visits versus the cost of unplanned downtime, including the customer’s losses. The calculation determines the interval, not the supplier’s recommendation alone.
If the equipment has an hour meter or transmits data, schedule maintenance based on usage rather than the calendar. This helps you avoid both unnecessary and overdue visits.
Service agreements with set intervals generate the work orders. The equipment must be registered first—otherwise, there is nothing for the agreement to be linked to.
