What is a resource requirement in Field Service?
When you create a work order, Field Service automatically generates an associated record called a resource requirement. It contains everything relevant to scheduling: how long the job will take, which skills are required, which territory it applies to, and when it needs to be done.
The work order describes what needs to be done and where. The resource requirement describes what is needed to get it done. This distinction makes it possible to schedule the same work in different ways—two technicians at the same time, or one who returns the next day—without changing the work order itself.
Manual scheduling, the scheduling assistant, and Resource Scheduling Optimization all work with the resource requirement, not directly with the work order. If the requirement is incomplete—for example, if it lacks a duration or required skills—the suggestions will be correspondingly poor. “The scheduling assistant suggests the wrong people” is almost always a symptom of empty fields here.
The booking status does not affect the status of the resource requirement. They operate independently. This means that a requirement may appear unfulfilled even if the work has actually been completed, if something has gone wrong in the setup—worth knowing when the figures in the scheduling reports do not match reality.
