What types of backups are available for Dataverse?
Dataverse is backed up automatically. It covers less than people think.
Microsoft makes backups continuously and retains them for a period of time. They are used to restore an entire environment to a specific point in time, typically after a serious failure.
You can create a copy yourself before making a risky change, and it will be retained for longer. Do this before major imports, upgrades, or deployments.
If someone accidentally deletes fifty contacts, the backup is of little practical help—restoration applies to the entire environment, and all other work done since then will be lost. For errors like these, access control and audit logs are the right tools, not backups.
