What is the difference between Project Operations and Project for the web?

This is one of the most common questions we receive, and the confusion is understandable—both have Project in their name, and both come from Microsoft.

Project Operations runs a project-based business

Here, the project is linked to sales, contracts, hourly rates, costs, and invoicing. It is designed for businesses that sell projects to customers, where the question is not only whether we will finish, but whether we will make money from it.

The simple test

Do you invoice customers for project work? If so, that points to Project Operations. If the projects are internal, Project for the web is usually sufficient—and it is both more affordable and quicker to get started with. Some organizations use both, each for its own purpose, and that is a perfectly valid solution.
