What is the difference between managed and unmanaged solutions?
The distinction may seem technical, but it has major practical implications for how easy it is to correct later.
The components can be modified freely. This is the format you work with in the development environment. If you remove an unmanaged solution, the components remain — the package was merely a grouping.
The components are locked against direct modification, and the solution can be cleanly uninstalled. Everything it added is removed. This is the format used for testing and production.
If an unmanaged solution is imported into production, the changes merge with what is already there and, in practice, cannot be separated again. Cleaning this up often requires rebuilding the environment. It is one of the costliest mistakes in Power Platform management.
Unmanaged only in development. Managed in test and production. No exceptions—the exception is always what causes the problem.
