What is the difference between Copilot, an agent, and a language model?
The terms are used interchangeably in marketing, making it difficult to determine which option is suitable.
The engine that understands and generates text. It does not know your data and does nothing on its own. Everything else is built on it.
Microsoft's ready-made assistants within its products. They can access your data through the product they are embedded in, and they are limited to what Microsoft has built. Little to configure, little to maintain.
Something you build yourselves in Copilot Studio, with your own instructions, knowledge sources, and actions. Full control—and therefore full responsibility for ensuring it works.
Start with Copilot where it’s available. Build an agent when you need something it can’t do—for example, answering customer questions about your own products.
