From suggestion to sales work
At its sales conference on 19 May, Gartner reported that AI saved sellers nearly five hours each week, while 72 per cent of sales organisations did not reinvest the time in higher-value work. Another 31 per cent of chief sales officers cited difficulty proving return. These survey findings showed associations rather than proving that a tool caused growth.
The Dynamics 365 wave 1 plan described customer insight and Microsoft 365 signals as inputs to the next sales action. Marketing activity could influence lead priority, while case and service context could change what a seller should promise. Automation required a shared customer identity and a definition of signals strong enough to trigger contact.
The handover had to survive operations
When a conversation revealed a service need, sales context had to reach the case without asking the customer to repeat it. Physical follow-up required Field Service to receive the correct asset, location, agreement, skills and time commitment. A generated summary could help, but the process owner still needed to check mandatory fields, duplicates and the agent's authority to create or change a work order.
Gartner highlighted account and buyer intelligence, lead management, deal orchestration, coaching and forecasting as five practical sales areas. They also created different control needs. Insight could be reviewed before use; a created activity needed a log; a forecast needed its data basis and time.
Saved time needed a destination
A bounded trial could follow one lead type from marketing signal to agreed follow-up or service case. The team could measure complete context, time to a relevant response, incorrect routing, manual corrections and whether saved time moved into customer conversations. This separated process improvement from faster production of suggestions.
Controls in practice
Gartner also reported that organisations providing AI-enabled next-best actions were 2.6 times more likely to be represented among those achieving commercial growth. This was an association rather than proof of causation. Teams needed to inspect whether a recommendation used current buying signals, the correct segment and a defined objective, and whether sellers could reject it with a recorded reason.
Marketing needed consent and contact-pressure checks before passing a signal onward. Service and field teams needed the promise made in a sales conversation translated into the same product, agreement and time fields used in operations. A monthly sample across all four functions could reveal whether saved time came with more corrections or a poorer customer experience.
