The work order is the starting point for everything else in Field Service. It can be created manually, but in practice, most work orders originate from a case, a preventive maintenance agreement, or a sale. Here is how to create one manually—and what you should enter to ensure that scheduling works properly afterward.
Start with the business partner the work concerns, and verify that the service address is correct. The address determines both travel calculations and which territory the job is assigned to, so an error here will affect the entire planning process.
The event type acts as a template. It automatically fills in the expected duration, the services and products normally included, and the skills the technician needs. If this is set up properly, the rest of the work order is almost complete as soon as you select the type.
These are the fields used for planning. If the duration is set to one hour because no one has changed the default value, the schedule will be off for the entire day. Also consider whether the assignment requires a specific certification, and add it as a required skill.
If the customer has an agreed deadline or a time window when they can receive the delivery, enter it now. Both the planning assistant and full optimization take this into account, but only if it is recorded somewhere.
The system automatically generates a resource requirement. Open it and verify that the duration, skills, and territory were included. This is what the scheduler works with—not the work order itself—so an empty resource requirement means the job will not appear in scheduling.
A new work order should have the status Unplanned. It will then appear in the planner's list of jobs awaiting scheduling and resource allocation, and your work is done.
