Calculation moves closer to the visual

Microsoft's 20 February Power BI update introduced visual calculations in preview. A user could add a calculation from a visual and work with its aggregated data. New functions covered running calculations, moving calculations and comparison with previous or next values. This reduced the need to express every such requirement as a model calculation.

The feature makes exploration more accessible to analysts who understand a report better than its DAX model. It also allows the same business concept to acquire different local formulas in several visuals. A calculation that explains one presentation can remain local. Margin, order intake or resolution time used across reports should retain a shared definition and owner.

AI and collaboration need visible logic

The February update also contained Copilot improvements and continued work on collaboration in Fabric. Natural language combined with simpler local calculations can shorten the path from a question to a chart. Professional review must still reveal the filters, aggregation and period behind the result.

An analytics team should classify each item as an exploratory calculation, report-specific calculation or enterprise measure. The publisher gives it an understandable name and checks it against known examples. If the logic is later reused across reports, the team moves it to the semantic model through its normal change process.

Test with a real decision

Select a monthly management report and one question that previously required manual treatment, such as change from the previous period or cumulative delivery. Ask two analysts to solve it independently. Compare the results, elapsed time and how easily a colleague can explain the calculation.

Also test changes to filters, sorting and visual type. A quick calculation whose meaning shifts with the presentation needs a clearer boundary. February's preview can support faster analysis and a better data conversation when local logic remains visible and reviewed, and becomes a shared model measure when more people depend on it.

The report owner should maintain a small catalogue of visual calculations with report, purpose, formula, control value and date. Before publication, another analyst checks one ordinary period and one exception. Users receive a brief explanation when sorting or selection can change the meaning. This record also helps when Copilot proposes analysis because the team can compare its answer with a known definition instead of judging whether the narrative merely sounds plausible.
