Planner changes both capability and transition

Microsoft said on 9 March that Project Manager Agent was renamed Planner Agent and made available across basic and premium plans under relevant conditions. The agent could assist with plan and task work, but the plan owner remained responsible for proposed tasks, owners and dates. The renamed product also affects training, support content and search; teams should update terminology without assuming identical features or licensing.

Three days later, Microsoft said creation of new Project Web App sites would be blocked from 1 April as part of Project Online retirement. Existing project sites and integrations needed an inventory. Project managers should record owner, active use, reporting dependencies, retention needs and target platform. A vendor deadline becomes internal milestones with time for test and correction.

March reporting adds options

Power BI published its monthly update on 18 March with changes across Copilot, reporting, modeling and data connectivity. Capabilities had different availability stages. Before using them in a project, freeze a sample of critical measures, record the model version and compare results before and after the update. New visuals or easier authoring do not redefine progress.

A transition program needs reports beyond activity volume. Measure inventoried sites, confirmed owners, tested dependencies, archived records and migrated users. Reports should show source date and allow checks down to individual items. When figures are collected manually, record time and responsible person.

Keep an inventory of reports using Project Online data. Record replacement source, comparison period and approver. Run old and new reports in parallel for at least one governance cycle, investigate differences and document approval before disconnecting the old source.

Organize collaboration around decisions

Connect every Project Web App dependency to a Planner task with owner, deadline, risk and evidence. Use task chat for working dialogue, while storing final decisions in a durable governing record. A Power BI report may consolidate status but should not be the only location for rationale and approval. New collaboration surfaces can then support work without weakening traceability.

Review unknown owners, blocked migrations and reports without verified sources each week. Test Planner Agent on bounded planning tasks and compare proposals with organizational transition requirements. March’s news links project management and collaboration at the same time: new assistance arrived while an older platform received a binding milestone.
