The demonstration
Bjørn Ove Width from DynamicWeb showed how a PIM system can collect and structure product information. The conversation covered use in sales, marketing and delivery, and why the same product attribute should be managed in one place before distribution to several channels.
What this means for the organisation
Organisations with many products need to define data ownership, quality rules and which fields each channel needs. A phased start with a bounded product group can expose gaps before the complete catalogue is migrated or integrated.
Bjørn Ove Width presented PIM as a central place for product attributes used across channels. The demonstration therefore connected sales and marketing to the same governance problem: who owns each field, which values are valid, and how omissions are detected before information is published or distributed.
ISO 8000-61 treats data quality management as a process involving responsibilities, requirements, measurement and improvement. It adds a vendor-independent perspective to the PIM demonstration. A central product register solves the quality problem only when the organisation also governs values, owners, exceptions and change over the product lifecycle.
A PIM pilot can measure completeness and validity for one product group before adding channels. Each field needs an owner, approved values and a change rule. Tracing exceptions back to source and process helps determine whether the problem comes from the system, responsibility or missing product data.
