Terje Melheim and Ida Langdalen Kristiansen from Moelven told Frode Stenstrøm about active leadership and internal communication at the group.
Terje Melheim, who leads leadership development, and Ida Langdalen Kristiansen, who is responsible for internal communication at Moelven Industrier, spoke with Frode Stenstrøm about how the group has worked systematically on active leadership and what they call "employeeship". They explained the distinction between knowledge and skills, and why a leader is treated as the most important internal communication channel.
They described the programme in concrete terms: a foundational leadership module, a digital communication module with podcast episodes and a workbook, and separate modules for leaders of leaders and media training. About 150 leaders have completed the foundational module (roughly 100 hours), and 280 leaders and specialists the communication module (about 20 hours), across 34 companies in Norway and Sweden.
Reported effects included higher scores for perceived feedback from immediate leaders, closer alignment between leaders' self-assessment and employees' assessment, and job applicants citing Moelven's internal leadership development as a reason for applying. A two-year preparedness project produced a simple, twelve-page emergency plan that was tested during a real IT incident.
They closed with advice for smaller organisations: keep ownership of the development work even when using external expertise, start small, and build concrete habits such as meeting agendas and positive feedback. The recording is from 2024 and is relevant to leaders and HR or communication managers planning similar programmes.
