Anthropic, OpenAI and Block announced the Agentic AI Foundation under the Linux Foundation on 9 December. Anthropic is contributing the Model Context Protocol, MCP, to the collaboration. The protocol connects AI applications to tools and data. The initiative shifts attention from individual vendors' features to the long-term stewardship of shared components.

OpenAI contributes AGENTS.md, an open format for providing agents with project-specific instructions. The company emphasises that these instructions should travel with a project across tools. That serves a different purpose from MCP's connection to external systems. The standards complement one another, but do not constitute a complete product for a business process.

Field Service connections receive a retirement date

In December, Microsoft also announced retirement of the existing integration between Dynamics 365 Field Service and finance and operations applications. Its 19 December documentation states that the connection will no longer be available after 28 February 2027. New environments without a configured integration also face a change to the installation option from a specified Field Service release. Existing environments retain access until retirement.

For service managers, this affects the connection between completed work and financial follow-up. In our assessment, the review should extend beyond the fields transferred: who corrects an incorrectly recorded hour, where is material consumption approved, and what happens if a transfer stops before invoicing? These decisions determine how demanding a transition will be.

Shared technology still needs process ownership

The announcements illustrate two different aspects of integration. Open standards can make it easier to share instructions and connect tools. A product integration simultaneously has its own lifecycle and prerequisites. MCP therefore does not by itself replace the Field Service integration scheduled for retirement.

Our editorial assessment is that businesses building agent workflows should document both process ownership and responsibility for maintaining connections. Operating procedures, error notifications and an agreed manual alternative matter particularly when an agent affects orders, service bookings or financial records.

For collaboration between IT, field service and finance, December's announcements provide a concrete reason to review dependencies before the next budget period. A planned transition can be tested against representative jobs and compared with today's results. That provides a stronger basis for decisions than assuming an open standard automatically makes every component interchangeable.
