Frode Stenstrøm and Oscar Høvik gave an overview of how businesses can connect their own data to Microsoft Copilot.
Frode Stenstrøm and Oscar Høvik from ProsessPilotene gave an overview of how businesses can connect their own business data to Microsoft Copilot. They described three levels: standard Copilots that Microsoft delivers ready-made (over 100 variants), extended Copilots where custom data is connected via plugins or connectors, and custom-built Copilots created in Copilot Studio or Azure AI Studio.
They explained key concepts for controlling a Copilot's behaviour: temperature (how predictable the answers are), tokens (how much text can be processed) and grounding (how answers are tied to sources and citations). These were used as criteria for choosing the right strategy based on the use case, development effort and where the data sources are located.
A central theme was the difference between Microsoft Graph connectors, which copy data into Microsoft's domain, and Copilot plugins, which perform real-time lookups against the source and can write data back. The choice affects security, compliance, and whether queries leave the company's own systems.
The recommendation was to use standard Copilots where they meet the need, extend with connectors or plugins when more customisation is needed, and only build custom Copilots when necessary. The recording is from January 2024 and reflects Microsoft's product landscape at that time, which has since developed further.
