How do you create development, test, and production environments?

Required tools

• Administrator access to Power Platform — You must be able to create environments.
• Capacity overview — Each environment uses part of the storage quota.

Create

1. 1.Create production first

   The production environment is the reference that the others should resemble. Give it a name that is impossible to confuse with anything else—people should be able to tell where they are from the address bar.

2. 2.Create test and development as sandboxes

   The sandbox type can be reset and copied from production. That is exactly what you need for these two.

3. 3.Set the same region for all

   The environments should be located in the same geographical area as production. Otherwise, you will get different behavior in testing and production, and any data storage requirements will not apply equally.

1. 4.Restrict who can create new environments

   Without restrictions, people create their own environments that no one has an overview of. Set this up before you roll out, not afterward.

2. 5.Decide who has administrator access where

   Multiple people can be administrators in development. In production, the list should be short and known.

3. 6.Clarify the procedure for copying from production

   Copies contain customer data. Decide how often they should be made, who should make them, and whether anything should be anonymized.
