How do you build your first canvas app?

Required tools

• Power Apps license — Check what your organization already has before you begin.
• A clearly defined task — One thing the app should do. Not five.

Prepare

1. 1.Choose one task and write it down

   The most common reason a first app never gets finished is that it tries to do too much. Choose one task that people do often and that is currently handled using a spreadsheet or email.

2. 2.Add the data to Dataverse

   It may be tempting to build on a spreadsheet simply because it is already there. But then the app inherits all its weaknesses. Dataverse gives you access control and traceability from the outset, so you avoid having to migrate later.

Build and publish

1. 3.Start with data, not a blank screen

   When you let Power Apps generate an app from your table, you get a list, detail view, and form right away. This is much faster than placing each element yourself, and you can make changes afterward.

2. 4.Test on the phone early

   An app that looks good on a computer screen may be unusable on mobile. Open it on your phone while you're building it, not when you're finished.

3. 5.Share with two or three people first

   Have the people who will actually use the app test it before you share it widely. The initial feedback is almost always about something you hadn't considered.

4. 6.Assign an owner and describe what it does

   Document who owns the app and what it is used for somewhere others can find it. Without this, a year from now the app will be something no one dares to change.
