What is server-side synchronization?
Server-side synchronization is the mechanism that keeps email, appointments, contacts, and tasks synchronized between Exchange and Dynamics 365.
Synchronization runs on the server. It works when the computer is turned off, works the same whether the user is using Outlook on the web or on mobile, and does not depend on an add-in being installed locally.
An administrator must approve the mailbox and run the test. If it fails, neither tracking nor App for Outlook will work, and the error message the user receives is rarely informative. This is always the first thing to check when troubleshooting tracking issues.
Which item types are synchronized in which direction is controlled by settings for each user or organization. Make a deliberate decision about whether contacts should be synchronized both ways—this is where unexpected duplicates most often occur.
