What is a data platform?

A data platform collects and processes data from one or more sources for purposes such as analysis and reporting. It can provide a common basis for comparing information across systems and over time.

Operational systems support everyday tasks, such as recording customers and orders. An analytics platform prepares the data for different questions, such as changes in sales or differences between customer segments. Historical data retention must be planned and implemented; it is not automatic in every platform.

Assess the need against the decisions the organisation has to make. Clarify data sources, definitions, update requirements, access and responsibility for quality before selecting a technical solution.
