What is Dataverse?
Dataverse is the database behind both Dynamics 365 and Power Platform. When a Power App, a Power Automate flow, and a Power BI report see the same customers, it is because they all read from Dataverse.
Dataverse has built-in row- and field-level access control, audit trails, relationships, and business rules. This is what sets it apart from storing data in a regular table, and why it is suitable for data subject to traceability requirements.
If you build an app on Dataverse, it inherits the security model already in place in CRM. A salesperson can see their customers in the app because they can see them in CRM. This means you do not have to build it or maintain it in two places.
If you need to store large volumes of event data or files, there are more affordable alternatives. Dataverse is designed for structured business data with governance requirements, not as a general-purpose data store.
